Aquino-Yap, a television host and actress, made the promise after distributing school supplies to some 2,000 elementary school pupils who were chosen by their school officials as beneficiaries of the project. She said she intended a yearly distribution of school supplies.
The activity was Aquino-Yap’s fulfillment of a promise she made while campaigning for her brother in this year’s presidential election. The actress said she would go to Cebu City and Mindanao, next.
The students were accompanied to the Aquino Center in Tarlac City by their school officials. Most of the beneficiaries came from the towns of Concepcion, Capas, Paniqui and Gerona, and Tarlac City.
Leonardo Soriano, 9, a Grade 2 pupil at the Magaspac Elementary School in Gerona, said he was happy to see “Ate Kris.”
“I thank her and [President-elect Aquino] for the school supplies,” he said.
The children received pad paper, five pencils, a sharpener, an eraser, two notebooks, a pair of slippers and a plastic envelope. They were given snacks and take home food packs.
Aquino-Yap said the goods were donations but she shouldered some of the expense to benefit more students.
She was accompanied in the activity by uncle Henry Cojuangco, representative-elect of Tarlac’s first district, and cousin Liza, daughter of Nationalist People’s Coalition chair Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr. Also present were some Tarlac mayors.
Outside the Aquino Center, Aquino-Yap’s fans gathered to see her.
