SAN PABLO CITY—PRESIDENT-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III skipped Saturday’s Independence Day parade at Rizal Park in Manila to attend the wedding here of Laguna Rep. Ma. Evita Roda Arago and Henry Gapit, a businessman from Lucena City.
The roster of personalities who joined Aquino as wedding sponsors included Aquino’s defeated running mate, Sen. Manuel A. Roxas III, reelected Sen. Franklin M. Drilon, Justice Arturo D. Brion, Rep. Liwayway Vinzons-Chato and Betty Nantes, widow of the late Quezon governor, Raffy Nantes.
San Pablo Bishop Leo M. Drona officiated the 3 p.m. rites.
Arago won the congressional contest in the third district in this city under Aquino’s Liberal Party.
She told the Inquirer that she had invited Aquino to be one of her wedding “ninongs” during the campaign period.
Arago, 34, said Aquino had replied “OK,” if he could find the time on that day.
“June 12 was the date chosen for our wedding because that marks the 11th year of our relationship as sweethearts. The wedding had long been planned,” she said.
“As a member of the Liberal Party since I ran for Congress in 2004, my original plan was to invite Noynoy and some Liberal partymates to my wedding, which had been planned for eight long years,” she said.
Arago said she also had a wish for her principal sponsor.“I will be very happy if after my wedding President-elect Aquino would also follow in my footsteps and wed his councilwoman-sweetheart.”
