Filing of candidacies start Friday—Comelec

MANILA  – Prospective candidates in the 2010 elections can start filing their certificates of candidacy this Friday, November 20, at the offices of the Commission on Elections nationwide, officials said Thursday.

The Comelec will accept CoCs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until November 30 and from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight on December 1, Commissioner Rene Sarmiento told INQUIRER.net.

House passes bill to officially allow early campaigning

MANILA - The House of Representatives has passed on final reading a bill that would allow candidates to promote themselves in public even before the actual campaign period begins, with legislators saying they approved the measure to protect the Commission on Elections from being swamped with election cases.

The bill, principally sponsored by Makati Rep. Teodoro Locsin, would amend the Omnibus Election Code that bars candidates from engaging in election campaign or partisan political activity outside the campaign period.

UN, int’l agencies issue new appeal for RP typhoon aid

MANILA - The United Nations and other international agencies on Wednesday revised and increased their flash appeal to support humanitarian efforts in typhoon-ravaged Philippines from the initial $74 million in early October to nearly $144 million this month.

The latest assessments by UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) show that some 4.2 million Filipinos are in still in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 520,000 children below five years old.

RP lifts ban on US meat, bone meal

MANILA  — The Department of Agriculture (D.A.) has lifted a ban on meat and bone meal imports from the US, saying the latter has a lessened risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or mad cow disease incidence.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said in a statement that the World Animal Health Organization or the Office International des Epizooties has adopted a resolution according the US a "controlled risk" status.

Villar gains runningmate, but not NPC support

MANILA - Sen. Manuel Villar may have gained a partner, but not necessarily the support of another party.

Though Sen. Loren Legarda has agreed to run with Villar, this does not translate to him also having the backing of the Nationalist People's Coalition as of now, according to Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco, son of the party's founder, tycoon Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco.
