MANILA - The acquisition of some 477 police patrol vehicles has effectively improved police mobility requirements and anti-criminality response, the Philippine National Police said on Monday.
Records of the PNP Logistics Information Management System (PLIMS) revealed that the purchase of these new patrol vehicles have increased the number of patrol vehicles to 9,688 units, which were distributed to 1,600 municipal and city police stations across the country.
PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina said that in hinterland towns in the regions of Cordillera and Mindanao, police use motorcycles to patrol and conduct security checks in these areas.
“With the latest acquisition of more patrol vehicles, police presence has been re-established in the countryside,” Espina said.
Of the 9,688 units of motor vehicles, 3,208 are patrol jeeps, 1,097 are patrol cars, 939 are patrol utility vehicles, 220 are trucks, 3,734 are motorcycles, 69 are combat vehicles, and 421 special purpose vehicles such as buses and vans, Espina said.
The PNP earlier also announced the purchase of 75 rubber boats that will be deployed in flood-prone areas to aid in rescue and relief operations. Also part of the PNP’s acquisition program in 2009 are several communication equipment, guns, and computers.
