Estrada to turn over reins of power to VP after 4 years

E-mail Print

MANILA  – Presidential candidate Joseph Estrada said on Monday that, should he win in the May elections, he would turn over the reins of power to the vice president after four years.

Estrada said he would need only four years to put Malacañang in order, according to his development agenda for the country.

But Estrada quickly added that he would have to carefully weigh his moves if his running mate, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, did not win.

Estrada candidly said he would want to retire from power still able to carry his own attaché case

He revealed that he felt vindicated after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s economic adviser admitted that the number of poor people grew during the nine years of the Arroyo administration.

Estrada became president in 1998 after garnering the largest plurality of votes for a president ever. He, however, was ousted from office by a civilian-initiated military-backed revolt in 2001, over charges of massive corruption and incompetence during his short watch. He was convicted of plunder in September 2007 and was pardoned by Ms Arroyo a month after.
