Boxing notes from Vegas: Z Gorres, Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao

LAS VEGAS – It was a bittersweet boxing weekend especially for Filipino boxing fans.

As many celebrated Manny Pacquiao’s historic achievement of becoming the first boxer to win seven titles in as many divisions, there were some people quietly concerned about the health of Bantamweight title contender Z Gorres.

The 27-year-old Gorres suffered a subdural hematoma (blood clot in the brain) after being knocked down by Luis Melendez in the 10th round of their match at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino last November 13. Gorres quickly got up from the initial knockdown but was stunned with a vicious right cross to the head again with a few seconds remaining in the last round.

The 27-year-old Gorres won the bout by unanimous decision but after collapsing in the ring, he was fighting for his life.

$10.8M federal stimulus fund for ARF facility at LAX

LOS ANGELES – Mayor Antonio R.Villaraigosa, with executives from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and City fire and airport departments on Thursday, November 12, broke ground for a new replacement Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) facility at the nation’s second busiest airport.

The $13.5 million Los Angeles Fire Department Station 80 project received 10.8 million in federal stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. "The new Fire Station 80 at LAX will improve our readiness for an emergency at the airport, clear the way for further airport modernization, and provide jobs to help revive the economy," Villaraigosa said.

Undocumented residents will not be deported if they fill out census forms

US Census Bureau say data is confidential

UNDOCUMENTED residents in the US will not be sent back to their countries if they fill out a census form, the US Census Bureau said.

In fact, these individuals will be able to shore up funds for their US-based families since a bigger resident-count will mean a bigger allocation for a particular area, a Filipino community partnership specialist, meanwhile said.

All-out Pinoy support for Pacquiao’s biggest fight of the year

LAS VEGAS – The biggest fight of the year is just right around the corner and everyone who arrived early to Las Vegas is feeling the hype.

Pictures of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto are splashed all over the MGM Grand Hotel, where the fight is taking place this Saturday, November 14.

Walking through the MGM and seeing what people are wearing (shirts and sweaters with Pacquiao’s face and Philippine flag), it seems that Pacquiao is the crowd favorite.

Sempra Energy CEO speaks about excellence in minority hiring

WHEN it comes to opportunities for minorities in the energy field, no company has done more and better than Sempra Energy, according to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

The CPUC commended Sempra during its seventh annual public hearing last November 2. The CPUC holds an annual public hearing to examine the diversity programs of the state’s regulated utilities like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Sempra and other gas companies. The purpose of the hearing is to discuss the CPUC’s and the regulated companies own commitment to diversity, and hear from diverse suppliers about program issues.
