House passes Pres. Obama’s Health Bill

NATIONAL Health Care reform took a huge step forward last week but appears it’ll take two steps back.

President Barack Obama’s number one agenda in the first year of his presidency is to overhaul the nation’s health care system and it took a big step forward when the House of Representatives passed a version of the bill last weekend.

In a 220 to 215 vote, the Democratic-controlled House voted to pass the health-care reform bill.

The bill would require most Americans to carry insurance and employers to cover their employees.

US President launches Veterans Job Program

PRESIDENT Barack Obama signed a new law aimed at helping military veterans find civilian work in the federal government.

Obama signed Executive Order on the Employment of Veterans in the federal government, which establishes the Veterans Employment Initiative for the Executive Branch.

The order will create a program to recruit and train veterans, aims to increase the employment of veterans within the Executive Branch, and helps recently hired veterans adjust to service in a civilian capacity, according to a White House statement.

Verizon president talks about efforts on supplier diversity

Highlights good ties with Asian-American groups, Fil-Am community

VERIZON Western Region President Tim McCallion was one of several presidents and CEO’s who discussed their companies diversity initiative and efforts to increase diversity in various utility operations through its Utility Supplier Diversity Program at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) seventh annual public hearing last November 2.

Based in Thousand Oaks, McCallion began his career more than 30 years ago with GTE. In 2000, the company merged with Bell Atlantic to form Verizon.

McCallion oversees Verizon’s operations in 17 western states. His duties include overseeing Verizon’s regulatory activities, governmental affairs activities, community relations, the Verizon Foundation, among other corporate interest within his jurisdiction.

He is also a member of the Telephone Hall of Fame.
