CHP writes thousands of tickets for hands-free driving law violations

SAN BRUNO, CA — “They still don’t get it,” says California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Marshall.  He was, of course, referring to the more than 20,000 tickets CHP has issued over the past three months to drivers breaking the by using a hands-free cell phone law.  

The California driving law imposes as fine of $20 for a first-time offense and a $50 fine for each additional offense.  Exceptions however are allowed, like calls to law enforcement agencies for emergency purposes or emergency services personnel while operating an authorized emergency vehicle.

325,000 baby boomers to develop Alzheimer’s disease in LA County in the next 20 years–DPH Report

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Alzheimer’s Association, California Southland Chapter, have released last October 1 two reports that showed the projected number of adults living with Alzheimer’s disease will increase during the next two decades.

“As the baby generation ages so does their risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. “We estimate that more than 325,000 baby boomers living in the county today are expected to develop Alzheimer’s disease during their remaining lifetimes.

The National Federation of Filipino AmericanAssociations (NaFFAA) has struggled, fought, and forged a mission to achieve empowerment for FilAms in the past 11 years. Last September 24 to 26, the 8th NaFFAA Empowerment Conference was held in Seattle, calling in hundreds of FilAm community leaders and organizers from all over the US.

But what stands behind NaFFAA’s success and survival aside from its members are its leaders—those who pushed the limits, in the desire to unite all the FilAm organizations all over the country.

Enslaved Filipina to sue for damages

MILWAUKEE - A 42-year-old Filipino woman from Camarines Sur, Philippines who was allegedly enslaved by a family for 19 years is seeking $5.4 million in damages.

According to the Associated Press, Irma Martinez filed a federal lawsuit last week in the Wisconsin Eastern District Court against her former employer Jefferson and Elnora Calimlim and their three adult children, Jefferson Jr., Christopher and Christina.
