100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the US recognized at Gala Awards

THE 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the US were recognized at the gala awards ceremony last Friday, October 30, during the Filipina Women’s Network’s Filipina Leadership Summit at the Claremont Resort Hotel in Berkeley, California.

The Filipina Women’s Network’s (FWN) Award is a working recognition award and a key initiative of Pinay Power 2012 which aims to double the number of Filipino women leaders by 2012. Pinay Power 2012 began in 2006 with a dream to inspire, inform, and advance Filipina women leaders who would infl uence the Filipino American community’s future. It provides a critical pathway for success ful women who care about advancement, achievement, and signifi cance. FWN honored the 100 women who are changing the face of power in America and who have reached status for outstanding work in their fi elds and are known for their leadership and achievements.

Cotto’s key to winning: Capitalize on Manny’s mistake

LOS ANGELES – WBO Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto said the key to winning the fi ght against Pound-4- Pound King Manny Pacquiao is to capitalize on the Filipino’s mistake.

"I’m going to take advantage of every opportunity in this fi ght," Cotto said during an open media workout at the Pound-4-Pound Gym in Los Angeles on November 3. Cotto and Pacquiao are set to meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on November 14.

Despite having two "perfect" fi ghts (one against Oscar De La Hoya and his most recent, against Ricky Hatton), Pacquiao, at times, leaves himself susceptible to catching a counterpunch.

According to boxing historian Burt Sugar, Pacquiao has a tendency to drop his hands when he steps back after he throws a left cross.

Obama signs FY 2010 DHS Spending Bill

Law ends widow penalty, includes to other petitions

A NEW law signed by President Barack Obama on October 28 will provide relief to immigrants whose petitions were revoked upon the death of their petitioner.

The FY 2010 DHS Spending Bill, which passed the Senate on a 79-19 vote on October 27, includes an immigration measure that allows a spouse, child and other family members to receive a green card when their priority date is reached, even when the petitioner dies.

Pacman gets special ‘Firepower’ pairs from Nike

ON October 27, Nike gave Manny Pacquiao two pairs of specially-designed shoes for his Nov. 14 fi ght with Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas billed as "Firepower." The presentation of the shoes, which came in a distinctive big wooden box, was done right after Manny’s grueling training at the Wildcard Gym in Hollywood.

The two pairs came in color variations of red and white, the color preferences of Manny.

"It will be up to Manny which pair he would like to wear during the fight," said Jesse Milliken, Nike’s shoe designer. " We like not knowing. It’s actually exciting to see which one he will choose to wear to fight Cotto with," he added.

Nike hosts typhoon benefit

LOS ANGELES – More than 400 balikbayan boxes fi lled with clothes, canned food and medical supplies are on its way to the Philippines to help the victims of the worst typhoon in the country’s history.

The boxes, stuffed the inside of a Forex 20-foot long shipment cargo container, were organized by the US-based Fil-Am organization Pangasinan Brotherhood, Philippine Emergency Disaster Relief Operation (PEDRO), and Forex, and will be received for distribution by the Pangasinan Association of the Court of Social Workers.
