LAS VEGAS—Police are still trying to determine the motive for the fatal shooting of a Filipino doctor last Monday, Jan. 12.
According to police, 80-year-old Eliseo Santos fatally shot Dr. Edna Almaden Makabenta in her medical office shortly after 9:00 am Monday morning, before turning the gun on himself.
Santos died shortly afterwards.
Police officials said they have yet to find a motive why Santos shot Makabenta, a well-regarded internal medicine physician in the Las Vegas area.
Police are continuing their investigation.
Henfel Baria, the owner of the building next door to Makabenta’s doctor’s office, said that Santos is a patient of Makabenta and one of their former patients.
Baria and his wife operate the West Charleston Pain Center next door to Makabenta’s office.
He said they found out about Makabenta’s murder when one of Makabenta’s patients ran into their office and began crying and screaming.
"She was just yelling that someone shot the doctor," he said.
Baria did not want to delve on what happened afterwards. He said that police arrived almost immediately.
He theorized that Santos might have shot Makabenta because he was in a lot of pain. Santos was dying of prostrate cancer and may have been suffering from depression, according to Baria.
"All I know is that Eliseo was always in a lot of pain whenever I saw him," he said.
Baria added that his wife treated Santos last year but the past couple of months Santos had missed several physical therapy sessions.
Baria remembers that Santos was in so much pain that Makabenta would sometimes send over a nurse to his home to watch over him.
