"This book dwells on forty years of writing in America. Through those years, the author has put her thoughts, reflections, experiences, perspectives and approaches through the vehicle of the written word." – "A Note to Readers," Forty Years of Writing in America
Los Angeles—The rain and holiday weekend traffic did not stop family, friends and supporters from attending Dr. Ludy Astraquillo Ongkeko’s launching for her book, Forty Years of Writing in America last February 14 at the Temple Gateway Youth and Community Center in the Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) facilities. The intimate gathering was attended by community leaders and members from Historic Filipinotown and throughout Southern California.
Joel Jacinto, SIPA’s Executive Director, welcomed Dr. Ludy Ongkeko and her husband, Colonel Hermie Ongkeko, with open arms like long-lost family members. Jacinto reflected on past stories about his ties with the Ongkeko family. "Tita Ludy was my mom’s dear friend for many years," he says. In more ways than one, we can all share in Dr. Ongkeko’s memories as we read her stories told through the eyes of a close friend.
Dr. Ongkeko writes about exchanging information and personal stories with significant people in her life. In one chapter of her book titled, The Power of Communication, she highlights some of her former students in the Philippines who have corresponded with her for the first time after more than forty years from various parts of the globe. Even after several years apart, there remains a sense of connection through the shared experiences of a mentor and her students.
Forty years from now, we’ll look back on this book and remember all the trials and experiences of this extraordinary woman finding her identity as both Filipino and American. We’ll remember Ludy Astraquillo Ongkeko as she is – a mother, daughter, wife, writer, teacher, mentor, confidant and friend. Her stories illustrate the words expressed from her heart and memories.
