A new analysis of data from the 2007 American Community Survey (ACS) recently showed that Filipinos in the United States remain among the top earners among immigrants or foreign-born residents.
A statement issued by the ACSlast Friday, February 19 said, "Among the foreign-born, those from India, South Africa and the Philippines have the highest median household incomes. The data revealed that the median family income of is at $81,625 (P3.8 million at $1:P47), with individual per-capita income at $34,167 (P1.6 million), which is higher than the $26,688 USaverage. Pinoys are also the third-largest group of foreign-born U
Sresidents, at 1.7 million, following the Chinese at 1.9 million, and Mexicans, who are more than 11.7 million.Citing that the median age is at 46 for Filipinos, the USCensus Bureau data also revealed that most are between 35 and 54 years old, forming 42.9 percent of their total population. Less than 1 percent (0.4 percent) are under 5 years old. The bulk, however, of the Filipino population are above 15 years old.
Majority of the Philippine-born USresidents are women (58.3 percent), and are categorized as married.Other information in the data also revealed that majority of the Philippine foreign-born USresidents are in the labor force, or 68.6 percent. Forty-two percent of them are in management, professional and related occupations, while less than 1 percent or 0.3 percent are in farming, fishing and forestry occupations in the US.Almost 82 percent are said to be private wage and salary workers, while less than a percent, or 0.1 percent are unpaid family workers.
This shows that 69 percent of Filipinos can afford to own a house, while the rest are renting. USCensus Bureau data also revealed that on average, nearly four people occupy an owned housing unit and nearly three in a renter-occupied unit. Gross rent is $985.In a released statement, Elizabeth Grieco, chief of the Census Bureau’s Immigration Statistics Staff said, "These new ‘selected population profiles’ highlight the diversity among the many different foreign-born groups in the United States," and added, "diversity is due in part to the way the various communities were established, whether it be through labor migration, family reunification or refugee flows."
Filipinos have migrated to the USeven before World War II, either voluntarily or involuntarily, majority populating Hawaii and California. Veterans who fought with American soldiers were also allowed to enter USborders, forming 4.8 percent in the Census Bureau’s data.( Published on February 25, 2009 in Asian Journal Los Angeles p. A1 )
