LONG BEACH—Police detectives are urging witnesses to come forward as they continue investigating the death of a 24-year-old Fil-Am man.
California State University Long Beach engineering student, Jesse Pelayo passed away on Sunday, March 15, from injuries he suffered after a brawl outside a Long Beach bar last week.
According to authorities, at about 1:50am on Thursday, March 12, Long Beach police officers responded to a report of a fight between two groups who left the Mai Tai Bar, a tropical themed nightclub spot in Long Beach.
Officers found two victims who sustained injuries from the fight.
Pelayo was one of the victims. Police officers transported Pelayo to a local hospital in serious condition, where he succumbed to the injuries a few days later.
The other victim left the scene, according to police.
Detectives have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident, 34-year-old Chhailee Rey and 31-year-old Michael Camou.
Prosecutors earlier this week have filed a murder charge on Rey Camou, a bouncer at the Mai Tai Bar, was released on bond. The District Attorney’s office said that a charge could still be filed on Camou pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Mai Tai Bar manager Jim Dufault said that the company is cooperating fully with the Long Beach police department.
"We are aware of the incident and our hearts go out to the victim and his loved ones," said Dufault to the Asian Journal.
A police officer who did not want to be named, said he could not comment due to the pending criminal investigation. He also said that they need more witnesses to tell them what actually occurred that night.
Detectives know there were multiple witnesses to the incident because the nightclub crowd was leaving the location at the time.
Anyone who may have witnessed the fight is urged to contact Homicide Detectives Daniel Mendoza and Todd Johnson at (562) 570-7244. (Joseph Pimentel)
