Like most Filipino families, NV Senator Harry Reid said he is frustrated with the immigration backlog that forces families to wait several decades to be reunited in the United States . As such, he indicated that a comprehensive immigration reform will be a priority in the USSenate, adding that, the proposed law should center on family reunification. "One of the goals of immigration reform is to focus on family reunification," he told a gathering of the Asian American Group (AAG) in Las Vegas last Wednesday, July 1st.
The senator was responding to a question posed by a member of the audience during the AAG event that stated the Filipino community is aggravated by the hefty backlog of immigration cases.
"I cannot imagine what people go through, waiting for decades to be with their families, so we are going to focus on that," Reid responded. With the current backlog at the United States Citizenship and Immigration office, immigrant petitions for family members can take more than 20 years to be processed.
Last month, Sen. Reid told reporters in Washington DC that a comprehensive immigration reform bill is "going to happen at this (legislative) session, possibly within the year."
The Democrat senator, who is the Senate majority leader, has control over the Senate’s legislative calendar. He said immigration reform bill is one of the top priorities this year along with health care and energy.
