Wanting to enlist more Filipinos in the United States for the 2010 presidential elections, the Philippine government has allowed voters to register in any Philippine consular office in the country.

As such, even non-Las Vegas residents are welcome to register during the Philippine Consulate General’s (PCG) consular outreach in this city on August 22nd and 23rd.

"Those from Louisiana, Reno Nevada, or any area not falling under Los Angeles PCG’s jurisdiction, may also register at our outreach in Las Vegas," Vice Consul General John Reyes told Asian Journal.

As a rule, only those residing in Southern Nevada, Southern California, Arizona and Texas can make consular transactions, including voter registration, with the Los Angeles PCG.

"(But) any qualified overseas absentee voter, regardless of residence, can now register in any consulate he or she wishes to register," Vice Consul Reyes added.

Overseas absentee voting (OAV) rules entail that voters who wish to register for Philippine elections need to do so in person at the consular office that has jurisdiction over the area where they reside. This makes it difficult for Filipinos who live far from a consular office to register.

Thus, to make voter registration easier, the Philippine Commission on Elections authorized US consular offices to relax the rule for this year. The consular offices where a Filipino has registered will forward the documents to the consulate that has jurisdiction over the place where the voter resides

"During election time, he or she will have to cast his or her vote in the consulate where he is covered being a resident therein," Vice Consul Reyes said.

The Philippine government had said it is targeting one million overseas Filipino citizens and dual citizens to register for the 2010 presidential elections in the Philippines.

As of June 30th, however, only a total of 118, 703 have registered, records from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs showed.
