NEW YORK—It is time to rebuild.

After the massive floods that devastated major cities in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces, killing more than 250 people and displacing hundreds of thousands of families, Filipinos from around the world are now busy trying to raise funds for the victims of the typhoon. Here in New York, various organizations such as the Philippine-New York Jaycees and other young

Fil-Am professional groups and alumni associations have embarked on both short-term and long-term fund-raising activities. "Let’s do this!" an enthusiastic Ted Martinez exclaimed at the conclusion of a meeting in midtown Manhattan attended by 80 other individuals who received the invitation through the social networking site Facebook.

This informal group’s concerted effort will be a two-phase fund-raiser: a not-so-happy hour social to generate funds immediately and a benefit concert in the city where proceeds would go to the rehabilitation and rebuilding process of the affected communities.

The Philippine Consulate General has also reiterated its call for the members of the community who wish to send financial assistance to the Philippines that they course their donations through "Project Handang Tumulong", a joint venture adopted by various Filipino community organizations to build a "Ready Disaster Relief Fund" that can respond instantly in the event of a natural calamity. It is fortunate that this mechanism was already in place and is now able to address the emergency situation posed by

Typhoon Ondoy, which will be the first beneficiary of the Project.

"This fund was conceptualized primarily because of natural calamities such as typhoon Ondoy, which, as we all know, visit the Philippines regularly," said Deputy Consul General Melita Thomeczec.

Activities have been lined up to raise funds for the project, among them the "Lakad Tulong" project, a 3-mile walk-a-thon starting at Jersey City Hall (280 Grove Street, Jersey City, 07302) on Sunday, October 11, 2009. Registration starts at 8:00 AM, followed by the start of the walk at 9:00 AM.
