ON October 27, Nike gave Manny Pacquiao two pairs of specially-designed shoes for his Nov. 14 fi ght with Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas billed as "Firepower." The presentation of the shoes, which came in a distinctive big wooden box, was done right after Manny’s grueling training at the Wildcard Gym in Hollywood.
The two pairs came in color variations of red and white, the color preferences of Manny.
"It will be up to Manny which pair he would like to wear during the fight," said Jesse Milliken, Nike’s shoe designer. " We like not knowing. It’s actually exciting to see which one he will choose to wear to fight Cotto with," he added.
The Filipino boxing icon is one of Nike’s biggest endorsers. The huge Nike billboard featuring Manny Pacquiao along Vine St in Hollywood gives him the distinction of being the first Filipino to have a giant billboard displayed in Hollywood. His victories have made Manny at par with American greats in sports and an admired icon in World Boxing.
In the old days, Manny wore Pony shoes, but when he faced Oscar Larios at the Araneta Coliseum, he was wearing the Japanese label Mizuno. But those shoe brands no longer made the grade following Manny’s tenth round KO over Morales. Since then, Pac-Man went on the ring with his robe, trunks and boxing shoes adorned with the familiar Nike swoosh.
In his last fight with Ricky Hatton, Manny wore the "MP shoes" which were also exclusively designed by Nike for the pound-for-pound king. However, after the fight, Manny wanted some modifications done for his boxing shoes.
Spencer Clifton, Nike’s footwear merchandising manager, and Jesse Milliken, Nike shoe designer, shared in an exclusive interview with Asian Journal all about the new boxing shoes (they also call it "boots"). "Manny told us that modifications were needed to be made on the shoes for his fight with Cotto," said Jesse Milliken.
