Three individuals who have helped promote Filipino heritage to the American community in Las Vegas were honored at a gala celebrating Filipino American History month in this city. At the same time, two USgovernment officials Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Shelley Berkley were also given tribute for being "champions of Filipino American concerns." At the gala,
Myrna Alforque, executive director of the Filipiniana Cultural & Arts Foundation was honored for leading a troupe that expresses Filipino heritage through Foundation was honored for leading a troupe that expresses Filipino heritage through dance. Alforque also led the Kalahi Philippine Folkloric Ensemble in several dance numbers at the gala.ABS-CBN Broadcaster Beverly Llorente, likewise, received an award of appreciation "for making sure Filipinos in Las Vegas are represented and seen all over the world."
A posthumous award was given to Dr. Rena Nora for her contribution to the medical field in Las Vegas . The award was received by her daughter Las Vegas Family Court Judge Cheryl Nora Moss.
The awards were given last Oct. 24 at Treasure Island Hotel as the Filipino American History Foundation-Nevada (FAHF) reiterated its pledge to promote Filipino heritage to the mainstream US.
"We at the foundation remain steadfast in our commitment to promote Filipino heritage to the mainstream American community in Southern Nevada," FAHF-Nevada president Dr. Romualdo Aragon said.
Dr. Aragon, who is also the founder of the organization, added, "It is our modest way of giving back to the community that has welcomed and blessed us with many opportunities for career and personal advancement."
