The Golden State Warriors became the latest major sports organization in Northern California to host a Filipino Heritage Night as thousands of Filipino Americans trekked to Oracle Arena in Oakland, California last November 21 to watch the home team battle the Chicago Bulls and their No. 1 pick, Derrick Rose.

The game was a see-saw affair, with no team leading by more than six points. In fact, it was the Warriors who took the initiative, holding leads at the end of the first three quarters before Chicago took control in the 4th quarter, outscoring Golden State, 30-23.

Larry Hughes led the Bulls’ scorers with 26 points, while Drew Gooden had 18 points and 16 rebounds. Stephen Jackson led Golden State players who scored in double figures with 32 points, followed by Corey Maggette with 24 points and Andris Biedrins with 23.

The game showcased, as many had expected, young talent from both teams.

PerformersRose, the No. 1 overall draft pick this year, scored 12 of his 25 points for the Bulls in the 4th quarter while shooting 12 of 19 from the field.

Golden State’s rookies – CJ Watson, Anthony Morrow, Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright and Marco Belinelli – scored a combined 29 points, going 12 of 39 from the field. Randolph, who came off the bench and led the Warriors’ rookies with 10 points, had two spectacular blocks in the 4th quarter which had the crowd jumping from the rafters, but also missed a shot in the closing seconds of the game that sealed the Warriors’ loss.

Between the 1st and 2nd quarters, FilAms female boxing champ Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton and former Golden State player Raymond Townsend were introduced by announcer Franco Finn to an appreciative crowd.

Many FilAms who attended the game actually learned about Filipino Heritage Night through friends, the radio, and the internet as it was not announce among any of the major FilAm newspapers in Northern California.

And, many came in large groups and were situated in the upper levels, from Sections 218 onwards. It was also in the upper level, near the entrance to Section 212 where free t-shirts were being given out to attendees who purchased Filipino Heritage Night tickets. Over 2,600 t-shirts were distributed that evening.

For Larry, Chester and Jose, who arrived at Oracle Arena at 5pm, attending the game had an added incentive – Chester’s cousin performed with the Kawayan Folk Arts (KFA) who had a pre-game performance. The three young FilAms were part of a 200-person group, including KFA members; they came from different cities, including San Jose, Tracy, San Francisco, Fremont and Livermore.

Another FilAm, Alex Roxas, said he was part of a group of 100 who came to enjoy the game. "It’s a great game so far," Roxas said, at the time he was interviewed. "I came here to support my fellow Filipinos."

Gil, 37, and Sharon, 32, who were taking having refreshments when the Asian Journal talked to them, had a total of 32 in their group, all from Daly City. They said they bought their tickets from Holy Angels via a fundraiser.

Caroline and Jeff, who were also waiting in line to get food from one of the upper deck levels, came with a group of 75, said they got an email from a friend talking about Filipino Heritage Night. "Sure, we’re enjoying the game," Jeff & Caroline answered, when asked by Asian Journal.

Robbie, 33, came to the game with his friends and "learned about the heritage night from my friend May Bautista."

For Vanessa and her son Kalen, it was just their two-some. Wearing Warriors gear and carrying a banner, Vanessa and Kalen told the Asian Journal that they will attend future Filipino heritage events in the arena for sure, and that they’re always hoping for a Golden State win.

And for Roomes, Roz, Beks and Cherry, it was all about being with friends and enjoying the game.

Among the Warriors players named by FilAms as their favorites are Stephen Jackson, Anthony Morrow, Kelenna Azubuike and Monta Ellis.

A future Filipino Heritage Night is in the works, the Asian Journal has learned. It will most likely be on February 12, when Golden State tackles the Portland Trail Blazers.

Filipino Heritage Night is one of the many heritage events that the Golden State Warriors collaborate in with community groups throughout the season in an effort to recognize different cultures in conjunction with the excitement of Warriors basketball in the hope of exposing the basketball team to new fans.
