Hosted by his fellow Dagupenos, De Venecia explained further how remittances sent by Filipinos abroad have saved the Philippine economy. A force in Philippine politics, the former Speaker said he designed, conceived and implemented the historic dollar-remittance program back in 1967 and to this day, remittances from overseas Filipinos keep the Philippine economy afloat and has become a model for the third world.
He has also been acknowledged as one of the country’s major architects for policies of war and peace.
Global Filipino is an insight into De Venecia’s colorful political life. "It has been said that it is very difficult to write a biography, because it is hard to recreate a life of a man," he said. But he thanked Brett Decker, author of the book, and a former editor of the Asian edition of Wall Street Journal for capturing the sense and the aura of life in contemporary Philippines.
Published by Regnery Publishing, Inc., Global Filipino sells for $27.95 a copy. De Venecia also recently had a book-signing tour in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York. The 400-page tome is also sold online in sites such as amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and buy.com.
In his short speech, De Venecia also pledged to create a better future for the Filipino people, especially the youth.
"Let me pledge to you, that our family will dedicate my last years of public life to creating a better future of the youth and Filipino people," he said and added, "Let us join hands and march to a new dream for the Filipinos."
