Gov’t urges AAPI firms to collaborate with community colleges

THE government is urging Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) –owned small businesses to form partnerships with community colleges to improve skills of current and future employees.

This is expected to create jobs and help strengthen the nation’s economy as the government recognizes small businesses as “engines of economic growth,” the White House Initiative on Asian American and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) said.

Voters seek better information on ballot propositions

LOS ANGELES – A new survey released last week showed voters are concerned about the influence of special interest money on ballot initiative campaigns and the use of the initiative system to attack people’s civil rights.

Voters said they want greater transparency regarding funders behind ballot measure campaigns, greater review and oversight of initiatives, and more information to help make decisions when voting, according to Greenlining Institute, a non-profit public policy organization and the authors of the survey.

CA job market improving

THERE were 28,900 new jobs in California last December which resulted in the dropping of the unemployment rate in the state. “We’re moving in line with the developments taking place in the US as a whole,” reported the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s (LAEDC) Chief Economist, Dr. Robert Kleinhenz.

Dr. Robert Kleinhenz, Chief Economist at the Kyser Center for Economic Research, hosted a teleconference call a few days ago with the members of the press, including Asian Journal.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Homeland Security Department has appointed a public advocate to handle complaints and questions about its immigration enforcement policies.

The appointment of Andrew Lorenzen-Strait, a senior adviser at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was announced Tuesday.

Court: CA gay marriage ban is unconstitutional

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A federal appeals court on Tuesday declared California's same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, putting the bitterly contested, voter-approved law on track for likely consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that a lower court judge correctly interpreted the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court precedents when he declared in 2010 that Proposition 8 was a violation of the civil rights of gays and lesbians.
