"THE vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men." - Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson

WITH only a few more days to go before the deadline to register for Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV), we would like to take an active role in encouraging our kababayans to exercise their right to vote for the May 2010 elections in the Philippines. The OAV registration ends on August 31.

"LIFE begins at retirement."

Or so we thought.

According to polls, President Obama’s health care overhaul plans are raising significant concerns from the elderly.

In his Washington Post op-ed piece entitled "Protecting Our Seniors," RNC Chairman Michael Steele discusses that "the Democrats’ [health care] plan will hurt American families, small businesses and health-care providers by raising care costs, increasing the deficit, and not allowing patients to keep a doctor or insurance plan of their choice. Furthermore, under the Democrats’ plan, senior citizens will pay a steeper price and will have their treatment options reduced or rationed."

Impossible dream, no more

Impossible dream, no more

"And the world will be better for this/That one man, scorned and covered with scars/  Still strove with his last ounce of courage/To reach the unreachable star."  - Excerpt from The Impossible Dream, (Man of La Mancha, 1972)

WHEN we think of Ninoy Aquino, one song reverberates in our head – The Impossible Dream.

According to former Senate President Jovito Salonga, Ninoy’s greatest legacy was his obstinacy in his position and beliefs. "From Ninoy’s life and death, we learned that we should never compromise with any dictator, whether homegrown or not, especially one who has no sense of right and wrong," Salonga said.

Jetsetters

Jetsetters

FINALLY, (it seems) we’re getting through to the government.

After being pummeled with never ending criticism and contention over the controversial $20,000 New York Le Cirque dinner that the first couple and their 65 cohorts partook during their US trip, and the disclosure of yet another lavish $15,000 dinner in Bobby Van’s Steakhouse in Washington DC, Pres. Arroyo’s request for a brand new presidential jet is perhaps, the most preposterous proposition she’s ever made as president of a poverty-stricken country.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde has announced Pres. Arroyo’s retraction from the said purchase. The P1.2 Billion that was previously earmarked for Pres. Arroyo’s new ride will be utilized, instead, to fund the expansion of the government’s anti-hunger and poverty alleviation programs, Malacañang stated on August 17. (And thank heavens for that!)

Lavishly unpopular

Lavishly unpopular

ADMITTEDLY, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s visit to the White House last July 30 was highly-anticipated and drew its share of attention. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. Two days after the chief executives met, Former President Cory Aquino succumbed to colon cancer. For 5 days, from the time of her death to Pres. Aquino’s journey to her fi nal resting place, the beloved leader’s death quickly stole media attention and the limelight away from President Arroyo.

Yet, after farewells have been bidden, the mourning crowds have dispersed, and Tita Cory was fi nally laid to rest, President Arroyo retrieves her thunder once more – this time, because of the controversial expensive dinners that she and her entourage reportedly rewarded themselves with, during their US trip. The infamous Page Six of the New York Post sparked what it called "a political fi restorm" in the Philippines by reporting the $20,000 dinner that Pres. Arroyo and her party lavishly feasted on in New York’s fourstar restaurant, Le Cirque.
