Old ties, new opportunities

THE much-anticipated historic meeting between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and US President Barack Obama fi nally took place on July 30. Arroyo is the fi rst Southeast Asian leader to visit the White House since Obama was elected as president in November of last year.

With the Visiting Forces Agreement and Balikatan exercises still ongoing under Pres. Arroyo’s administration, the ties have remained sacred, especially since the United States is the Philippines’ largest source of military aid and the only country with which it has a defense treaty. The Philippines has remained as one of the closest allies of the United States in Asia.

Healthcare for all: Boon or bane?

ALONG with food, shelter and education, healthcare is imperative for anyone. However, the cost of healthcare in the United States has risen dramatically. For the past two decades or so, more and more people have been left without quality healthcare.

President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform aims to cover between 94 to 97 percent of the American population to ensure that almost everyone will have access to high quality health care. Individuals will be required to carry health insurance, as well as employers for their employees, or face penalty. All health care plans would also be required to provide coverage for an "essentials benefits package," and cannot deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Subsidies would also be offered to families with an annual income up to 400 percent of the poverty line.

Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. alleges that the Chief Executive will use this opportunity "to convene a constituent assembly and introduce amendments to the Constitution," says Philstar.com.

Senators Francis Pangilinan, Panfilo Lacson, Aquilino Pimentel Jr., and Mar Roxas have already expressed their intentions to boycott this year’s SONA, despite assurances from Speaker Prospero Nograles that "there is no factual and/or legal basis for this unnecessary warning from the former Speaker."
