Vindicated, at last

AFTER more than 60 years of struggle, the few surviving Filipino WWII veterans are fi nally in the process of claiming their well-deserved benefits.

When the Philippines was a US commonwealth, President Roosevelt conscripted members of the Philippine Army into the US military to fi ght Japan. By the end of the war, as many as 430,000 Filipinos had fought under Gen. Douglas MacArthur, including 60,000 in the 80,000-soldier Bataan Death March. In 1942, Congress recognized their valor and heroism by promising them equal benefits with their American counterparts.

AMIDST the political turmoil and outrage caused by the now infamous constituent assembly, amid the chaos being caused by the onset of the presidential campaigns, representatives from various sectors in the Philippines converged in Boston, Massachusetts for the 2024 Gawad Kalinga Global Summit 2009. The summit ran from June 12 -14, working towards a single-minded and altruistic goal – "A World Without Poverty."

Prominent figures as Vice-President Noli de Castro, Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Conrad de Quiros, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, GK Champion Tony Meloto and GK Builder Dylan Wilk took time from their hectic schedule to discuss possible solutions to fight the neverending battle against poverty in the Philippines.

WITH the onset of new and more portable technology like laptops and cellphones with wireless internet, almost everyone is capable of getting information off the net, engaging themselves in intelligent discussions through blogs and social networking sites and doing it all singlehandedly with a push of a button.

For kids and teenagers, this new technology is practically indispensable. Toting PSP’s, iPods and iPhones, these kids were born at a time when clicking a mouse is a mere part of their playtime.

When it comes to education, This accessibility to up-todate information is quick, easy and best of all, light to carry in their bags or pockets, compared to lugging around antiquated, heavy and expensive textbooks.
