Global workers, national providers

ONE of the biggest exporters of manpower in the world, the Philippines continues to send Filipino workers abroad. There are several factors that move Filipinos to seek employment in other countries – poverty, lack of job opportunities and the ongoing political crisis that is affecting the economic performance of our nation.

The Filipino diaspora began over a hundred years ago. The concept of emigration was brought about by our colonizers. During the Spanish rule, Europe was the main destination of Pinoys. Then, when the Americans took over, Filipinos were taught the English language. Our educational, political and economic systems were patterned after the US system. The United States overrode Europe and became the Pinoys’ new destination.

So what’s in the agenda?

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will meet with President Barack Obama in Washington DC on July 30, the Department of Foreign Affairs has confi rmed on July 12. This will be the fi rst meeting between the two presidents since Obama’s victory in November of last year and during Arroyo’s fi nal months of being the Philippine Chief Executive for nine years.

In a statement from the White House, the meeting is expected to be a venue for the two heads of state "to discuss ways to enhance US-Philippine cooperation on critical global issues including counter-terrorism and climate change, as well as further the traditionally strong alliance and bond between our nations."

THEY may be behind bars, but the 1,500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center have earned their share of global fame with the debut of their YouTube dance video, Thriller in 2007. And they owe their inspiration and the recognition that they were afforded from the man who started it all – the pop icon himself, Michael Jackson.

The King of Pop passed away on June 25 from cardiac arrest in his home in Los Angeles and the world was never the same.

Memorial gatherings,tributes and 24/7 news updates on investigations following his death continue to flood the airwaves until now.

(Still) waiting and hoping

IN HIS continuing advocacy to reunite our Fil-Am WWII veterans with their children in the Philippines, US Senator Daniel K. Akaka recently reintroduced the Filipino Veterans Family Reunifi cation Act of 2009.

The bill seeks to exempt sons and daughters of Filipino veterans from immigration numerical quotas that have delayed the processing of their US visas. Depending when the petitions were filed, the waiting time takes at least 18 years.

WHILE pundits are busy pummeling President Obama with criticisms and shaking their heads in dismay over his actions on Guantanamo, General Motors, the health care system and Iran’s civil unrest, the President makes himself even more vulnerable to flagellation by admitting a nasty habit – smoking.

Pres. Obama ruefully admitted his fight with the big C (cigarettes, that is) but redeemed himself by signing one of the toughest laws ever formulated in American history -- the anti-smoking law that seeks to keep teenagers off the habit.
