With Pinoy Power comes great responsibility

DURING the reception for Asian Pacific Islander Leaders Group held last week at Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s house, June Lagmay, a kababayan was introduced. She will assume the position of City Clerk this June in the city of Los Angeles.

The mayor handpicked Lagmay because he said that she is "a woman that has served in various capacities and done each one extraordinarily well." Villaraigosa recognizes Lagmay’s strong abilities and capabilities, a fact that makes her kababayans in Los Angeles truly proud.

To all these, Lagmay’s humble words were " I feel very strongly the responsibilities riding on my shoulders, and I acknowledge that I get it. I am very appreciative to all of you who have been a mentor, a friend, an advisor along the way."

Working out a merger

FORMER President Fidel Ramos has a lot to say about the recent merger of the administration’s Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) with Lakas, saying that it was done with "undue haste." He feels that there is a reason why details about the merger were not presented to most of the Lakas members, and that it did not go through "proper consultation with all the party stakeholders."

Ramos, however, who is the chairman emeritus of Lakas and co-founder of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, believes that the merger should have been handled properly.

Hoping for world peace

WE often hear people say how they want "world peace." However, every nation has its culture and beliefs that usually clash with another. For one, religion or "faith" holds a strong bearing to a people, which is why it is important to arrive on a common ground in spite of religious differences.

Ambassador Hilario G. Davide, Jr., the Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations, believes that it essential for the UN to take further steps to promote religious and cultural understanding through an interfaith dialogue and the mass media. An interfaith dialogue refers to cooperative and positve interaction between people of different religious traditions and spiritual or humanistic beliefs.
