The historic $700 billion plan

After two tumultuous weeks in Congress and Wall Street, President Bush’s $700 billion bailout plan is final.

The bailout gives the government broad authority to buy up toxic mortgage-related investments and other distressed assets from tottering financial institutions. It is designed to ease a credit crunch that began on Wall Street but is engulfing businesses around the nation.

Rising above the tides

For any female worker, being a part of a male-dominated industry is more than just tough. Through time, the world has been a witness to the woman’s struggles in the workplace and the hurdles she has to go through in order to support herself and her family, among them discrimination, exploitation, sexual harassment, and being constantly stereotyped as the weaker sex.

The plight of Filipina seafarers is no different from this. It is a reality that affects all migrant workers, even our male workers. They know that they can file a complaint against their employers or co-workers who commit offenses against them, but helplessness would usually get in the way.

Recognizing the Filipino spirit

HISTORY has somewhat depicted certain Filipinos as rebels like Macario Sakay, or in much earlier years, Philip Vera Cruz, who was a Filipino American labor leader, farm worker and a leader in the Asian American civil rights movement.  He was also the vice-president of the United Farm Workers, a group that represents the rights of migrant workers.

Fighting for our rights is one part of the Filipino spirit, along with our hospitality and bayanihan characteristics.  It is part of our culture, our heritage – something that makes us whole as a nation, as a people.

Running for RP’s next president

ONE could only imagine the stress and responsibilities attached to being a leader of a country.   So for a number of people, it is a question why one would even aspire to run for the position of president.

In the past months, the list of candidates in 2010 for president was limited to a few people, mostly members of the Senate.  However, just recently, another name cropped up in the line-up – Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.
