OVER 5 percent of the total population in the United States right now is composed of Asian Americans—while 1.5 percent are Filipino Americans. Although even most Asian Americans already have chosen the candidate they are going to root for, 34 percent of them still remain undecided. However, these numbers can give us the idea that Asian Americans can draw the future of this country by a simple act of voting.
In the upcoming US Presidential elections, a milestone is in the waiting—a historic feat is already set as two influential parties collide—the Democrat (Obama) and the Republican (McCain)—for the much coveted rank in the country – the presidency. If all Asian Americans who are eligible to vote participate in the electoral process, the candidates’ future in the White House can be decided.
We all see both parties’ concerns and visions, we hear opinions being disseminated by different people from all walks of life and we witness the country divide itself to two parties, but why should we care?
As part of this country we need to live as responsible citizens. The results of this election could rest upon the hands of Asian Americans. We, as members of this great community can be of great effect to the country by becoming the swing vote.
The Asian American community can make a difference by making sure that our vote is counted. We are a driving force —a community that has earned the right to choose who to lead this great nation. (www.asianjournal.com)
