Queen of Jazzipino Charmaine Clamor set to Host ‘A Jazzy Christmas’

E-mail Print

On December 13 (Tuesday), at the world famous Catalina Bar & Grill Jazz Club, Filipinos will be in the spotlight. That’s when the 7th Annual Fil-Am Jazz and World Music Festival, presented by ABS-CBN and JazzPhil-USA, returns to Hollywood. This year’s edition is called A Jazzy Christmas and will feature Pinoy jazz stars performing their interpretations of holiday favorites.

December 13 is also when the one and only Queen of Jazzipino Charmaine Clamor returns to her hometown of Los Angeles to serve as celebrity host. She’ll be joined by popular KKJZ 88.1 FM DJ Bubba Jackson, who is one of the mainstream community’s biggest supporters of Pinoy jazz.

2011 has been a busy year for Charmaine. In February, she was asked to give a command performance at Malacanang for President Aquino and his VIP Guests, including United States Ambassador Harry Thomas. Touring in support of her 4th US album, Something Good, which was her third recording to crack the JazzWeek World Music Top-20, Charmaine made debuts in Boston, Montreal, Detroit, Paris, and Hawaii. She also had the honor of entertaining Ambassador Cuisia and his diplomatic guests at the Philippines Embassy’s official Filipino Independence Day reception, in Washington, DC.

You may have seen her on TV or heard her on the radio. But Charmaine has to be experienced live to be fully appreciated. Because of her busy touring schedule, the 7th Annual Fil-Am JazzFest will be the only opportunity to see Charmaine Clamor in Los Angeles until next March. That’s when she’ll be giving two nights of concerts at the Getty Museum.

Still, she always finds time for JazzPhil-USA, which she serves as Chair of the Board. “This organization is precious to me,” Clamor says. “I’m passionate about Filipino jazz. I believe in our talent and our spirit, and I’ve dedicated my life to proving that great Filipino artists deserve a place in the mainstream jazz scene.”

Ms. Clamor certainly does. As the best-known Filipino-American jazz and world vocalist, she performs at festivals, concert halls, and top jazz clubs around the world, and no matter where she goes she insists on including Tagalog-language songs in her set list. “Jazzipino has arrived,” Clamor declares. “Now the world is enjoying some real Filipino spice!”

Along with her colleague Bubba Jackson from KKJZ, Charmaine Clamor will have the pleasure of introducing her fellow artists as the host of the evening’s festivities. She is also expected to sing.

Jackson and the Queen of Jazzipino will join the 2011 JazzPhil-USA Talent Search winners, Angela Vicente (vocals) and Vincent Reyes (guitar), and featured performers Abe Lagrimas (drums, ukulele) Winston Raval (piano), VJ Rosales (vocals) and Noel Melanio (harmonica).

The 7th Annual Filipino-American Jazz and World Music Festival is presented by ABS-CBN and JazzPhil-USA, a nonprofit organization, and generously sponsored by Asian Journal, LA 18 KSCI-TV’s Kababayan LA, Hydee Abrahan Photography, Joel Sebastian Make-Up & Hair, +639 Magazine, and Filamnation.com.

Tickets for “A Jazzy Christmas” are only $20 and can be purchased through the JazzPhil Website: www.JazzPhilUSA.org. Reservations and more information are available from Catalina Bar & Grill Jazz Club: (323) 466-2210.

On December 13, is the last chance to see Charmaine Clamor in Los Angeles until March at the Getty Museum. Will you be there.
