THE Oriental Mindoro Association of Southern California (OMASC) crowned Alexandra ‘Ali’ Umali Chua, the 2008-2010 Miss OMASC, at a dinner dance held at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel in September of this year. The occasion celebrates the 15th anniversary of OMASC’s founding. Ali is the daughter of Ellen Umali and Arthur Chua and a granddaughter of former Oriental Mindoro governor, the late Alfonso Umali, Sr. The Honorable Vice Consul Charmaine A. Serna-Chua, a Mindorena from the capital city of Calapan, was the guest speaker. Two members of the clergy from Oriental Mindoro, Reverend Fathers Wilfredo Villas and William Abas, were on hand to bless the occasion.
The annual celebration has been a tradition at OMASC since its founding in 1993. The annual highlight alternates between the induction of officers and the coronation of the muse, a format that fits their non-coincident two-year terms. OMASC also proudly observes a tradition of service to the province of Oriental Mindoro. It has donated fire trucks, ambulances, medical equipment and supplies, books and other educational materials. It has also provided college scholarships to deserving students and is quick to send relief goods to victims of natural calamities in the province. Early in the year, it sponsored an acoustic guitar concert featuring Fr. Mimo, the singing priest from Oriental Mindoro to benefit the Saint Augustine Seminary in Calapan.
On February 2 to 3, 2009, OMASC will sponsor a two-day medical mission in Calapan and Roxas in cooperation with the UST Medical Alumni Association of Los Angeles and the Rotary Club of Calapan. The mission is a project inspired by Doctors without Borders and run by a team of physicians led by Dr. Linda B. Enriquez, an alumna of UST. The goal is to provide free medical examination and treatment and perform minor surgical procedures if needed. OMASC is calling all members visiting the Philippines in early February to volunteer their time and/or resources to this worthy cause. For more information on this volunteer opportunity, please call Ernie Cleofe, OMASC president, at (714) 322-2598, or Eleanor Evangelista, committee chairman, at (818) 438-6369. (Mila Maramot)
