The Asian Journal received the Community Building Journalism Award from the Filipino American Library at its 8th Annual Gala and Benefit concert Jazzmopolitan last Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Aratani Theatre of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Little Tokyo.

Cora Oriel, president of the Asian Journal, said that getting the award in October during the Filipino-American Heritage month is quite auspicious.

“We would like to thank the Board Members of the Filipino-American Library for bestowing us with the 2008 Spirit Award in Community-Building Journalism. With the common goal to be a vital information resource, we share the mission of giving the Filipino-American community a forum to learn, to network and provide the knowledge to empower oneself and strengthen the standing of Filipino-Americans.” Oriel said.

Asian Journal began in September 1991 and is now the largest newspaper in the Filipino-American community, with editions circulated in Orange County, Northern California, New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Alec Mapa, a talented actor, comedian, playwright and journalist, and known for his work in Broadway’s M.Butterfly, was honored with a Role Model award.

Currently seen on ABC’s Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty, Mapa said that he is extremely honored to receive the award from the Filipino-American Library.  “I feel right at home with the community.”

When asked about working in the mainstream industry, he said, “You have to be ten times as better and work very hard. If they have one chance or opportunity they must grab it. I feel like really, really lucky to be in the film and television industry. I trained really hard and continue to do so. I am sort of regular now in Ugly Betty. The writers keep on creating parts for me which is good.”

As a gay actor of Filipino descent, Alec Mapa believes in supporting AIDS Project Los Angeles, The Matthew Shepard Foundation, Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services and Project Angel Food, among others.  Alec Mapa will be in the same company as Tia Carrere, apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas, Lou Diamond Phillips and Dean Devlin who received the same Role Model award from the FAL.

Macy’s, the largest retail brand of Macy’s, Inc., was honored for Corporate Philanthropy.   The company which delivers fashion and affordable luxury to customers at more than 800 locations in 45 states, has a diverse support division for the Asian American community called the Macy’s Asian Affinity Group. It fosters cultural understanding, education, networking and community involvement.
