Fil-Am robbery case underway

THE movie “Ocean’s Eleven” inspired a Filipino-American to steal more than $1.5 million from an Indian Casino, according to his attorney.

Rolando Luda Ramos, 27, is accused of masterminding a million dollar heist at the Soboba Casino in the Inland Empire two years ago.

Solon invites Fil-Am activist to inquiry

MANILA - The chairman of the human rights committee in the House of Representatives has urged Filipino-American activist Melissa Roxas to appear before investigating bodies in the Philippines and tell the story of her abduction last month, saying she was a living testimony that torture exists in the country.

Quezon Representative Lorenzo Tanada III said he met Roxas on June 10 in Los Angeles when he was in the United States to speak at the Independence Day celebration of a Filipino community there.

Filipina golfers feel 'honored' by award

HAVRE DE GRACE, MARYLAND - Filipino professional golfers Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin beam with pride following awarding ceremonies for the “Golden Cultural Heritage Award” by Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy C. Gaa at the sidelines of the McDonald’s LPGA Championship here.  Philippine flags were pinned on Rosales and Delasin and certificates were given by Ambassador Gaa in recognition of their ““outstanding and meritorious contributions to raising awareness of and deepening appreciation for the Philippines, her culture and her peoples through excellence at the highest level of professional golf.” The recognition is part of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C.’s month-long commemoration of the 111th Anniversary of Philippine Independence which highlights the achievements of Filipinos and Filipino Americans.  Rosales and Delasin won the 2008 Women’s World Cup of Golf in South Africa. The awarding was covered by LPGA.com.

It’s final: No same-sex unions in California

CALIFORNIA - Hundreds of people stood anxiously outside the steps of the California Supreme Court in San Francisco Tuesday morning waiting for the court’s decision on Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.

Within minutes after the state court made its decision, a boo rang out in the crowd followed by a chorus of “shame on you” as saddened and emotional yet hopeful supporters of same-sex marriage commiserated with each other on the state court’s 6-1 vote.
