Jetlagged Arroyo parties with FilAm group

WASHINGTON - A travel weary President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo frolicked in the company of nearly 500 Filipino-American supporters, mostly her “kabalen” (provincemates), at a hotel dinner party here ahead of her meeting with United States President Barack Obama.

“G-M-A, all the way,” chanted members of the event host, FIL-USA, which was formed a few months ago by former Angeles City Mayor Edgardo D. Pamintuan, Arroyo’s adviser for Subic and Clark infrastructure projects.

A wedding with 150 to 200 guests is considered big in the United States. In the Philippines, that size is “cozy” for weddings, where guest lists can go up to 2,000 people.

During her three-month research before launching Likha Event and Catering Specialists, Filipino-American caterer Charmaine Sandoval learned a lot about the local market, its huge size and unique demands.

FilAm policeman honored on 3rd death anniv

Filipino-American Tomasito "Nick" Birco Jr., an officer of the San Francisco Police Department, was remembered on his third death anniversary with a memorial service befitting a hero at the Bayview Police Department on July 26.

The Birco family received a plaque of honor from the SF Police Department which Nick served for five years.

On a brisk Saturday in June, Fifth Avenue in Anchorage looked a lot like a street in Manila, Philippines.

Parading through downtown past a number of on-lookers were banner-bearers, a distinguished married couple wearing sashes and little flocks of quick-stepping, dark-haired girls in white First Communion dresses. Behind them were young women in tiaras and full ballgowns – each in one of the colors of the rainbow. They processed gracefully in intervals as if in a beauty pageant.
