Filipino WWII vet turns 100 with hope in his heart

PUSHING his own wheelchair down the halls of the Las Vegas nursing facility where he was staying, 99-year old Silverio Cuaresma was a picture of strength that belied old age.

Moments earlier, he refused an offer to sit in the chair and be wheeled to the center’s recreation room from his bedroom. Aside from proving his physical strength, Silverio also confirmed he was still sharp as a razor when during the interview with Asian Journal, the Filipino former soldier recalled in detail the greatest moments in his military career.

API Equality-LA reaches out to Manny Pacquiao regarding gay marriage

LOS ANGELES, CA — Manny Pacquiao is arguably the most famous Filipino person in the world today. API Equality-LA Steering Committee member Noel Alumit said, “Mr. Pacquiao has uplifted the spirit of Filipinos all over the world, including mine. That’s why I was concerned by his comments on gay marriage. Young people look up to him.”

API Equality-LA makes Marriage Equality and the fair treatment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders a priority in their advocacy work. The organization which focuses on the Asian and Pacific Islander communities has many Filipino and Filipino Americans among its membership. Leading community organization Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) is one of API Equality-LA’s supporters.

Filipino-American to receive 2012 Monarch Leadership Award

Another Filipino-American woman will be recognized in San Francisco and the Bay area at a ceremony at the Intercontinental San Francisco Hotel on June 03.

Ms. Leah Laxamana is one of the awardees of the 2012 Monarch Leadership Awards by the Pacific Asian American Women Bay Area Coalition (PAAWBAC).

Cerritos City Councilmember Mark E. Pulido honored with APAICS Trailblazer Award

Cerritos City Councilmember Mark E. Pulido was honored with the inaugural APAICS Trailblazer Award from the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) on May 8. APAICS is a national non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Asian Pacific American participation and representation at all levels of the political process, from community service to elected office.

Congresswoman Linda Sánchez, a member of APAICS, presented the award to Councilmember Pulido at a special event held in Washington D.C. The event was held as part of the APAICS celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Also as part of the celebration, Councilmember Pulido attended a private meeting with President Barack Obama, former Cabinet Member Norman Y. Mineta and several members of Congress.

NV legislators ask Pres. Obama to act on FilVets claims

Saying it is an honor to plead for the cause of Filipino World War II veterans, Nevada state legislators have vowed to ask President Obama to reconsider the soldiers’ denied compensation claims.

At a hearing last May 15, the Nevada Legislative Committee on Senior Citizens, Veterans and Adults with Special Needs said it will send a letter to the president to urge him to act on the appeal of these senior veterans.
