Fil-Ams crave for good news about RP

SAN FRANCISCO - Filipino-Americans braved thunderstorms, flash floods, and even the threat of swine flu to hear good news about the Philippines from a government team that recently visited key cities in the United States as part of an information road show.

“It was a pleasant surprise to us to see how enthusiastic Filipinos in the United States were in wanting to hear the good news about the Philippines rather than the bad,” said Secretary Edgardo Pamintuan, Presidential Adviser on External Affairs, who led a government team that presented positive developments taking place in the country that overseas Filipinos know little about.

5 Fil-Am groups get Bayaning Pilipino awards

REDWOOD CITY - Five Filipino-American organizations received the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino 2009 awards recently in ceremonies held at the Studio TFC at the ABS-CBNi corporate office in Redwood City here.

First Filipino vet in SF to get $15,000

SAN FRANCISCO - Cirilo Calderon, a Filipino World War II veteran from Natividad, Pangasinan, served in the 14th Infantry from 1943 to 1945. Last April 14, he became the first veteran in San Francisco to receive a decision on his claim for Filipino Veteran Equity Compensation.

That day, he received a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs telling him he is “entitled to receive a Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation. The same letter said this “benefit shall not affect existing rights, under applicable laws and regulations, to VA (Veterans Affairs) benefits or other Federal benefit program.”

Mabuhay Alliance holds Microbusiness Technical Assistance Program to assist small business owners

In its continuing effort to assist minority entrepreneurs, the Mabuhay Alliance will be holding a Micro-Business Technical Assistance (MTA) program on May 1, 2, 8, and 9 at the City Hall Training Room located at 333 90th Street, Daly City, CA 94015. Completion of the program will also qualify small business owners to avail of Mabuhay Alliance’s Micro-lending program with comparatively very low interest rates.

Bacani received the lump-sum payment from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on April 8, in recognition of his U.S. military "active service" during World War II. The first 195 checks were issued on April 6 to qualified Filipino WWII veterans. More than 26,000 applications have been received by the VA and 766 have been reviewed and completed.
