Filipino-American Tomasito "Nick" Birco Jr., an officer of the San Francisco Police Department, was remembered on his third death anniversary with a memorial service befitting a hero at the Bayview Police Department on July 26.
The Birco family received a plaque of honor from the SF Police Department which Nick served for five years.
The SF FilAm Police Officers Association, which was organized right after Nick's death three years ago, announced at the memorial service the formation of a scholarship program for selected young people studying law enforcement.
Nick was killed in a vehicular pursuit of robbery suspects at the intersection of Cambridge and Felton Streets. He was only 39 years old then.
The suspects were arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter, among other charges.
Nick was a model son to Tom and Zeny Birco and a proud member of the United States Marine Corps and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm in the Gulf War before he joined the SF Police Department.
