HIS Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles expressed his deep sense of admiration of Filipino Catholics in Los Angeles.
In a speech delivered during the recently concluded Filipino Friends of the Cathedral Foundation, Inc.’s 3rd Biennial Fundraising Event and Awards Ceremony-’An Evening in Vienna,’last January 16, 2010 he pointed out that Filipino Catholics are the “Core of the Cathedral.”
“They are there at 6:30am when it opens”, he said, referring to the Filipino faithful, “they are the last ones to leave when the Cathedral closes at night.”
The Cathedral officially known as the Cathedral of the Lady of Angels opened its doors 8 years ago. Since then, the Filipino Catholic support and presence continue to impress not only the Cardinal but Rev. Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, Pastor of the Cathedral, as well.
During the invocation, Rev. Msgr. Kostelnik offered prayers and thanks to the efforts of Filipinos in general for their contributions to the Cathedral and the community.
Cardinal Mahony praised Dr. Leonard and Mrs. Lydia Cruz for their significant contributions to the various causes sponsored by the Cathedral and for organizing the tremendously successful event.
Mrs. Lydia Cruz, well known philanthropist, is the founder and chairman of the board of the Filipino Friends of the Cathedral Foundation, Inc.
Shortly after the speech, Cardinal Mahoney presented the FFCF Awards assisted by Mrs. Lydia Cruz and Mrs. Lisa Santos Cadano, foundation president. The awardees are: Award in Medicine- Noli R. Zosa, M.D., Award in Business-Mr. Darryl & Mrs. Erlinda Stone, Award in Rehabilitation Care-Mr. Manuel Alvarez, Humanitarian Award- Mr. Rupert & Mrs. Grace Ouano, Highest Special Award-Dr. Peter Kaldas.
Cardinal Mahoney also made no secret of how impressed he was with the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra including the performances by Soprano Kit Navarro and Tenor Pete Avendano. He extended an official invitation to FASO for a full orchestra performance at the Cathedral.
