FIRST she introduced the world to “jazzipino,” the blending of American jazz with Filipino languages, melodies, and native instruments. Now Charmaine Clamor, the #1 Filipina jazz singer in the United States, is going all the way back to her homeland of the Philippines.
On November 9, 2008, Charmaine Clamor debuts her new FreeHam Records album My Harana: A Filipino Serenade.
Singing in eight native languages and dialects – including Bisayan, Ilocano, Kampampangan, and, of course, Tagalog – the sultry voiced Charmaine Clamor revives the beautiful Filipino courtship tradition of harana, in which an impassioned suitor serenades his love beneath her window. Backed by an ensemble of modern and indigenous instruments (including bandurria, kutiyapi, and kulintang), Charmaine Clamor is the first female artist to record an entire collection of these beloved Filipino classics.
My Harana: A Filipino Serenade, includes musical treasures such as “Oh, Ilaw,” “Dungawin Mo Hirang,” and “Lahat Ng Araw,” revived in fresh arrangements by Ms. Clamor and her collaborator, the Filipino guitar master Richard Ickard. Renowned Filipino jazz vocalist Mon David joins Ms. Clamor on a stunning duet of “Minamahal, Sinasamba.” It is available now for pre-order on Amazon, iTunes, and CDBaby.com.
“No matter where I perform around the world, whether in jazz clubs or concert halls, I share my heritage with pride,” said Ms. Clamor. “After the astonishing success of my last CD, Flippin’ Out, I was more determined than ever to promote the beautiful musical traditions of the Philippines. Mainstream listeners love the songs. But this album is really for my kababayans.”
Charmaine Clamor is the first Filipina artist to bring the languages and culture of the Philippines to mainstream American listeners. Her music is played regularly in Los Angeles on KKJZ, KCRW, and NPR, and her music videos are seen on the Myx TV channel. In recognition of her musical trailblazing Charmaine Clamor was recently honored by the Filipino Women’s Network as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipino Women in the United States.
The official release concert for My Harana: A Filipino Serenade is on November 9 (Sunday), at the famous Catalina Bar & Grill Jazz Club, in Hollywood. The concert is proudly presented by The Law Offices of David Zuckerman, Tribune-USA, TDRZ Productions, and FilAmNation.com.
