SLRC Goes Pop: OPM Collection

NEW YORK—On August 18th Kalayaan Hall guests were treated to a two-hour performance by the San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir “SLRC Goes Pop: OPM Collection”.  The performance was produced by the Philippine Science High School Batch of 1985 and the media sponsor was GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV.  Other sponsors included Fil-Am Movement for Progress and The Lewis College.  Proceeds benefited the PSHS Teachers Healthcare Fund which will enable sponsorhsip of a sustainable out-patient health care program for teaching and administrative staff.

he audience was amazed by the energy and clarity of the voices of each San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir member as well as the single voice of the SLRC.  SLRC celebrated the Tagalog and English hits by Original Pilipino Music artists or OPM.  The melody and harmony of the male tenors and basses and female sopranos and altos was led by former Madrigal Singer Enrico Lagasca.  Music Directors Rogelio B. Penaverde and Leo Paolo Luciano Leal, and pianist Clement Acevedo saw Lagasca’s conducting skills for the SLRC for the first time.  The first half of the show featured traditional praise songs that we know SLRC for.  However, after the intermission, they featured OPM hits such as Kay Gand ng Ating Musika, Forevermore, Ihip ng Hangin,  Ay ay ay Pag-Ibig, Paraiso.  They also featured two medleys featuring songs by Rey Valera, Louie Ocampo, Ryan Cayabyab, Gary Valenciano, Rowell Santiago, Franklin Kleiner, Benedict Say, and Ogie Alcasid.  The audience will probably most remember Enrico for his solo complete with dramatic stage performance.  After the finale, Isang Dugo Isang Lahi Isang Musika, SLRC was given a standing ovation. This was proof positive that Lagasca’s conducting skills passed with flying colors.

The  SLRC helped PSHS Class of ‘85 reminisce their high school days as Philippine Science High School scholars.  Kay Abesamis, Sam dela Cruz and Anna San Luis said in the program, “It is a call for us to appreciate and be grateful for our origins and the things and people that made us who we are; and to use these learnings and gits to grow towards a brighter future.”
