MARK Pulido, newly-elected council member in the City of Cerritos, will be the keynote speaker at the Philippine Heritage Institute International’s (PHI) 22nd Anniversary and 4th President’s Award: “Profiles in Service, Pillars of Community” on April 30, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Select, La Mirada, California. The newly-minted council member is also one of the President’s awardees this year.
Pulido, 42, former ABC (Artesia-Bellflower-Cerritos) Unified School District board member, made history by garnering the most votes among seven candidates for the City Council during the March 8 elections. He will serve for four years.
PHI celebrates its 22nd year as a Foundation, a non-profit entity, for the advancement of Filipinos globally through Health and Education Programs focusing on the youth. In line with its “mission and vision,” PHI has developed a concept of giving recognition to community leaders whose endeavors have enhanced life in our adoptive country, the United States, and in our Homeland, the Philippines.
This year’s community leader awardees are advocates for community causes, media, military officers, civil servants, journalists, and educators, among others, who have done above and beyond the call of duty by giving back to the community their time, talent and treasure: Cely Anuran, Manuel Baculi, MD; Roxanne Bonar, Esq.; Walnut Mayor Antonio “Tony” Cartagena; Col. Pete Cruz; Marc Jonathan E. De Jesus; Ananias Ebilane, MD; Rene Galano; Tessie Lightholder; Ted Lim; Andres A. de la Llana, M.D.; Milagros P. Ocampo, Ph.D; Col. (Ret.) Hermie T. Ongkeko; Ludy A. Ongkeko, PhD; Josie Borja Phillips; Calinica Semense, MD; Cora Aragon Soriano; and Perfecto “Marty” Tobias.
Each honoree will receive a plaque of recognition from a previous PHI awardee (or from a presenter of his or her choice), as well as a youth witness handing over an “Aladdin Lamp” statuette.
“It is a symbolism of passing on the heritage of civic spirit and responsibility to the ascendant generation to inspire the youth to take up volunteerism as a way of life,” said Naomi P. Armada, PHI founder and executive director.
An orientation luncheon reception held on March 27th not only developed bonding of friendship among the awardees and the PHI trustees but also appraised the honorees of the PHI’s goals and motivations behind the awarding rites.
“To make a story short,” said one of the speakers, Trustee Rosalie Valencia, “PHI gives credit where credit is due. We hope that to be a recipient of an accolade is something you have worked for, and deserve and therefore, something to be appreciated.”
