Galing Pinoy showcases the triumph of the Filipino spirit — the Filipino’s innate perseverance to rise above. A double entendre, Galing Pinoy literally translates to both coming from (or brought to you by) the Filipino and Filipino ingenuity.

Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan – First Fil-Canadian Member of Parliament (MP), A multi-faceted leader

Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan – First Fil-Canadian Member of Parliament (MP), A multi-faceted leader

MORE than twenty years ago, on November 21, 1988, Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan earned his place in history when he won a seat in Canada’s Parliament, unseating New Democrat David Orlikow, the 26-year-entrenched incumbent. Taking his seat in the House of Commons in Ottawa that following December, he became the first Filipino Canadian to become an MP (Member of Parliament) and the first Filipino to be an elected member of a federal or national legislature in the whole of North America and the world.

"It was not within my dream that I would be a Member of Parliament in Canada," said Dr. Rey, as his constituents often call him. The humble physician, professor and politician has surely come a long way from the poor boy who was educated through the generosity of his community in Cavite and who never forgot his roots.

Director Victor Maog: Theater Extraordinaire

THERE is a bit of Filipino infl uence in each play Fil-Am theatre director Victor Maog (May-og) directs.

"Every story that I do is a Filipino story," said Maog to the Asian Journal. "Everything that I do is inherently Filipino. Everything that I do is inherently about the values of Catholicism or my family, or the Maog name. All of those things converge when I approach a play even if it’s a western or Shakespearean play, it’ll always be through a Filipino American lens."

Looking through a Fil-Am lens allows him to embrace the similarities and differences of the culture, he said.

Pinoys in the NFL

THE National Football League kicked off the opening of its season last month and Pinoy fans should be aware that this year, there are several players with Filipino blood to look out for every Sunday.

Chris Gocong of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jordan Dizon of the Detroit Lions, Steve Slaton of the Houston Texans, Aaron Francisco of the Indianapolis Colts and of the Tennessee Titans all carry some Filipino heritage.

"Besides Manny Pacquiao, there haven’t been many Filipinos who have played in the professional major leagues or mainstream sports," said Bo Navarro, Amano’s manager. "This just shows that Filipino youth are embracing the sport."

Filipinos are not known to be football players. Most Filipinos don’t have the physical size that many NFL personnel are looking for, said Navarro.

"Let’s be honest not many Filipinos are built like Eugene – 6’3" and over 300 pounds," added Navarro.

But there have been a few Filipinos who’ve played in the NFL.

Roman Gabriel is the son of a Filipino immigrant. Gabriel played quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams during the 1960’s and the Philadelphia Eagles in the mid 1970’s. Gabriel was a successful quarterback winning the NFL MVP award in 1969 and was named to the pro bowl (all-star team) four times.

Tedy Bruschi, half Filipino and Italian, played linebacker for the New England Patriots. In Bruschi’s 13-year Patriots career, he has been a part of nine playoff seasons, eight division championships, five conference titles and three Super Bowl crowns, according to the Patriots.com. He retired earlier this year.
