The 19-year-old Fil-Am is trying to make it in the world of Philippine show business. And so far she is on the cusp of stardom.

IMAGINE yourself in an airplane getting ready for landing. You look through the cabin window and see the lights of the city of Los Angeles below you. As the plane descends slowly towards the runway, the pilot follows the airport’s precision approach path indicator (PAPI), a light system positioned beside the runway. The PAPI consists of boxes of lights that provide a visual indication of an aircraft’s position on the glide path for the associated runway. Suddenly, the lights go out. Blackout! Can you imagine the horror that would be for the pilot to land without any lights on the runway to guide him?

It was two days before Thanksgiving in 2007 and United States Air Force Captain Cristina Miranda was busy preparing for the coming holidays. Christmas is always the happiest time of the year ever since she was a little girl among her family in Tarlac. Though she has immigrated to the US in 1992 where the Yuletide season is not celebrated as long and as festive as in the Philippines, still it is the best time in the year for the young Air Force captain and her husband, Richard, and two sons, Derek and Joshua.

Then, the unexpected came. Cristina received a notice that day that she is being deployed to the war-torn country of Iraq.

IT occurred late at night. Fil-Am Tim Rabara sobering up from a drug binge walked into a Mira Mesa Church, kneeled down on a pew and prayed to God for help.

It had been a while since he prayed or even set foot inside a church.

But the 19-year-old felt abandoned, alone, and just sick of the life that he had been living. He was a gang member and a drug addict. His long time girlfriend, the one person that cared about him had just left him after she gave him a stern ultimatum, "it’s either me or the drugs."
