Zeny at the Zenith
WHEN Maria Zenaida Fernandez Cunanan was growing up in a little town in Pampanga, she never imagined that her nickname, Zeny, portends her future. For the beauty and brains was destined to do great things; to attain the zenith – the highest peak- of success. So successful that a city in America proclaimed one day in its history as the "Zeny Fernandez Cunanan Day".
Yes, July 30, 1994 was proclaimed by then Mayor Louis Iquinto of Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia as "Zeny Fernandez Cunanan Day" in recognition of Zeny’s outstanding contributions to the statewide and citywide community. It was the first time a Filipino-American has been honored that way with an official proclamation from the Clarksburg City Hall.
Graduating as a salutatorian in high school from St. Joseph’s Academy in Pampanga, Zeny has been a consistent recipient of honors and awards her whole life. She graduated as Magna Cum Laude from the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. She became a faculty member of the UST’s Faculty of Pharmacy, Medical Technology and Biochemistry and was a Clinical Instructor in Bacteriology and Parasitology.
When Zeny migrated to the US, she first joined St. Vincent Medical Center in New York, NY as a medical technologist before she relocated to Bridgeport, West Virginia.
She was the office manager in the medical office of her husband, Dr. Roberto F. Cunanan, when she decided to start something that changed her life forever.
"I wanted something for myself rather than helping with his practice," Zeny said.
To determine what type of business she can get into, Zeny went to Washington, D.C., and attended several conferences, including one that focused on high technology. At the time, there weren’t many information technology companies doing work in Fairmont and North Central West Virginia. Then during a conference at Fairmont State for women-owned companies, Congressman Alan Mollohan inspired the participants to pursue information technology. Cunanan was so inspired that she founded Galaxy Global Corporation which has become one the leading design, engineering, analysis, testing, assessment, retooling and software improvement company in the United States.
To further hone her management skills, Zeny took up the Owner/President Management Program at the Harvard University School of Business Administration.
