A day for Poetry

Our modern lives have made a demand for the instantaneous. We surround ourselves with things that make our lives easier. There is a desire to be connected, to have access to the wealth of information out there. There is nothing wrong with this for we are continuously moving forward and pushing the limits of what is human. That is part of the human mantra. But as we move through this fast-paced world, there will always be reminders of our humanity that we can always look back to. Let’s take poetry for example.

Poetry has been around since time immemorial. Before it was written down for wider transmission, it was in our mouths and served as the gatekeeper of our memories in oral form. It aided the prospering of cultures and gave people a sense of community, of who they really are. Poetry functioned as the erudite mouthpiece of man’s experiences throughout the ages—from his greatest triumphs to the lowest points. It was a constant companion to his journey. Recently, a special day was observed to give tribute and celebrate the gift of verse.

The 21st of March marks World Poetry Day as declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and it gives way to the promotion of poetry throughout the world. The proclamation recognizes the importance of poetry and its nuances in fostering dialogue among cultures. On the world stage of poetry, we have renowned poets like Shakespeare, Neruda, Tagore, Dante, and Rilke. Isn’t it about time that we include our very own Balagtas in that roster? For we are part of the world’s poetry and this is will be our proud contribution.
