Peace and all good for the Azkals

Another feel-good moment is added to the highlight clips of Philippine Sports with the Azkals winning the Philippine Football Peace Cup crown that was held last September 25 to 27. For football players and fans, it means so much more for it has nearly been a century, 99 years to be exact, since we last won an international football tourney. That was in 1913, the year wherein we won the Far East Games, was a really long time ago, just 17 years after the Philippine Revolution of 1896. And here we are now watching our Azkals run amongst fields of gold.

The Azkals blasted national teams from Guam, Macau, and Chinese Taipei. They went undefeated in three matches racking up nine goals. Filipino-German Denis Wolf was heralded as the Most Valuable Player of the tourney and was handed the Golden Boot Award for his four goals. Other awards were also given to the Azkals—Eduard Sacapaño, Best Goalkeeper; Filipino-Belgian Jeff Christiaens, Best Defender; and Matthew Uy, Best Midfielder. The Chinese Taipei team was 1st runner-up, followed by Guam and Macau settled for 3rd.

This is should serve as motivation for the Azkals as they pump up their preparations for the Suzuki Cup this November. The euphoria of this win, hopefully, will function as fuel for the team to work harder and add more hardware to the trophy room. Distractions will always be around, and there is no other available action but to kick it hard out of the field. For players with commitment issues, they need to make their respective stands clear. This is the national team and there is no room for selfish demands for this concerns the nation. But again, credit goes to the Azkals, coach Michael Weiss and his staff for this accomplishment.
