Summer remnants

The heat still hovers around the metro. It makes itself known to everyone with its imposing presence. Some may find it a bit irritating as it becomes a source of displeasure. This fever-pitch position on the temperature scale has a direct connection with the rise of electric bills due to high consumption by electric fans and air-conditioners. Others, mostly the young folks out on vacation, troop to the malls for temperamental compensation. This cool breeze-by feeling is free, by the way. But the signs are out there.  Already, there are showers here and there that comfort our nearly boiling bodies and sprinkle the land with the smell of alimuom aka petrichor or the scent of rain. Yes, the summer will soon be saying goodbye to Filipinas.

What remains of it are slowly disappearing, as if dissolving along the gutter brought about by the occasional showers—the hints of the approaching rainy season. The days of beaches gleaming with the golden brushstrokes of the sun are numbered. Halo-halo as a vision of divine cold relief will soon disappear along our shelves of craving. But just because it is ending does not mean that is already a movie marked with the word FIN. While there is still time, why not spend that weekend in some lovely beach where the sun remains an eternal king? Or head over to the summer capital of Baguio, even beyond to the other places of the Cordilleras, as your teeth sinks into some succulent strawberries? Can you fulfill your fantasy of swimming in a bowl of halo-halo? For festive ones, there are still festivals on May and early June that celebrate this golden season as it reaches full-circle on its parade.

So let us make the most of this summer. The numbers may be one for the books, but the rainy season ahead of us will be totally different from what we are experiencing now. As we get soaked in the rain, experience the inevitable floods, and get our feet wet; we will be missing the sun and the feeling of being dry (if not sweaty at times) and all the things we can do under its majestic presence. This is the right time to relish what remains of this season. The gold that glitters will be gone soon, but don’t worry, there’s always next year.
