The Hawaiian Punch’s kick is still there

With the days leading up to Pacquiao-Marquez IV ( and hopefully this will resoundingly end) the boxing world saw another classy fight courtesy of Filipino-American and World Boxing Organization flyweight champ Brian “the Hawaiian Punch” Viloria who scored a convincing victory via technical knockout over Mexico’s Hernan “Tyson” Martinez. Viloria’s feat was a rare one for the flyweight division which saw a unification for the first time in 50 years. The Hawaiian Punch really came out smoking and was potent with his fists as he retained his belt and snatched another, this time the World Boxing Association flyweight belt from Martinez.

There was a time when Manny Pacquiao’s dominance of the sport glittered amongst Filipino boxers. Viloria was included on that little golden age of boxing—Filipino champions that were scattered among the divisions: Pacquiao at super featherweight, Donaire at super flyweight, and Viloria at flyweight. Well, of course, Pacquiao made a phenomenal move among the divisions and became an 8-division champion. Donaire held his ground at the flyweight and super flyweight divisions and eventually moved up to super bantamweight where he’ll probably settle down as king. Viloria stayed with his division and had some scares along the way through lackluster fights that led to losses. But as those imbued with the spirit of warriors, the Hawaiian Punch climbed his way back to respectability and earned his title back coupling it with a succession of successive title defenses.

Now that he is on top again, Brian Viloria will once again invade the consciousness of Filipinos. Not long ago, he was the pocket-rocket with a handful of punching power. Now, he has grown up in front of us. His fists still carry the power that he was known for. Yes, he will never be a Manny Pacquiao because they are two different boxers. The Hawaiian Punch is his own drink of choice.
