Christmas as told by lights and sounds

WHAT do you expect of the country’s leading commercial city?

In Makati, everything is in motion—so fast and busy that one forgets to slow down and take in the beauty of the surroundings.

Since 2011, this has been changing annually every Christmas Season. The Ayala Triangle, the heart of Makati’s Central Business District located between Ayala Avenue, Makati Avenue, and Paseo de Roxas, has been undergoing a transformation.

The Festival of Lights, made possible by the Ayala Land and in partnership with HSBC, brings color and fun to the Triangle through a dazzling display of roughly a million colored light-emitting diode or LED lights. These are connected by 45,000 meters of cabling with almost 500,000 digital channels. What leaves people even more awe-stricken is that these lights dance to Christmas medleys.

This 2014, the lights and sounds show opened on November 12 and will run until January 4 of next year. Every 30 minutes from 6:00 to 10:00 in the evening, Ayala Symphony of Lights Director Voltaire De Jesus in collaboration with Musicians Anna Piramide, Jazz Nicolas, and Mickey Amitoso of Watusi Manila, showcases an audio-visual feast.

Consciously or not, the busy bodies pause for a moment and enjoy the bursts of lights that dance on foreign holiday carols along with Filipino-favorite jingles. This even attracts families, friends, and lovers who live outside the area to gather in the park.

Lips are curved into smiles, mouths are left open. It is fascinating to think that this festival has been reminding people of life’s simple joys— what Christmas aims to do.
