Will Efren Peñaflorida be RP’s first CNN Hero of the Year?

Will Efren Peñaflorida be RP’s first CNN Hero of the Year?

Results known on Thanksgiving night.

HEROISM is alive more than ever. Just ask Efren Peñaflorida.

Efren is one of the founders of Dynamic Teen Company (DTC),which has launched several youth awareness projects, talent and self-development activities and community services. DTC is best known for their "pushcart classes," where they conduct classes for kids who do not have the opportunity or means for a proper education.

Every Saturday, DTC replicates a school setting in the most unlikely places like the cemetery and the municipal trash dump to teach kids, with ages ranging form 2 to 14, the basics of counting, reading and writing. Currently, the pushcart classroom has a total of 350 enrollees in four sites in Cavite. The group hopes to bring the "pushcart classroom" into the roads of Manila soon, having already conducted ocular inspections in Leon Guinto in Malate.

DTC, which now has 125 volunteers and still counting, brought a much welcome change to many kids in Cavite, most of whom have resorted to petty crimes and violence prior to DTC’s assistance. For this, Efren and DTC received praises from various media groups and other prominent figures, including Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno, who says that the country could use a "transformational leader" like Efren.

One Night Only: Stephanie Reese Reaches for her Dream

WHEN Stephanie Reese visited the Philippines to do volunteer work for Gawad Kalinga, little did she know that she’d be creating a name for herself in her mother’s home country.

She was already known outside Manila, at least in the theater circuit as she has tackled the roles in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The King and I, and of course, as Kim in Miss Saigon.

Before she knew it, she was performing before audiences who were clamoring for encore numbers and who awarded her with much-deserved standing ovations. For her, there was no turning back.

ALL SYSTEMS GO: David Foster & Friends Kicks Off 10-City US-Canada Tour

CHICAGO – The much-awaited 10-city tour of David Foster & Friends began with a big bang at the packed Rosemont Theater in Chicagoland Wednesday, Oct. 21.

But before that, David Foster himself opened the doors of the theater to the Asian Journal to watch the rehearsals the day before.

To say that the entire group’s schedule was hectic would be an absolute understatement.

David and Charice began their day by trooping to the WGN studios, where one of Chicago’s more famous morning shows is taped. Then it was off to rehearsals.

(1 vote, average: 5.00 out of 5)

NEW YORK—What was initially planned as a small, intimate show ballooned into something big and great, as Lea Salonga performed before a crowd of about 200 people at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center.

Through ticket sales alone, the event generated more than a million pesos in funds that would be donated to the flood victims in the Philippines. Donations to Ayala Foundation USA surged from October 2 to 12 because of the awareness the event brought and generated an additional $77,800 (roughly P3.7 million pesos).

Leading the Pack: Raising hope, money for flood victims

NEW YORK—The past few weeks have been very hectic, especially for the Filipino-Americans in New York and New Jersey who have been faced with a wide array of events and fund-raisers where they can give their donations for the victims of the twin disasters that hit the Philippines.

The first typhoon, which resulted to the country’s worst flooding disaster in over 40 years, has displaced over 450,000 people and left 380,000 living in makeshift shelters. There are 246 known to have died in severe flooding caused by the Ondoy, (international name: Ketsana) which struck on Saturday, September 26th.
