Preparation is now underway for the 39th annual Feast of the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno de Quiapo. An 18th century replica of the miraculous images of the Jesus of the Black Nazarene, owned by the late Dona Mercedes Syquia de Villar of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, was inherited by her son, internationally known beauty impresario Ferdie Syquia de Villar. Ferdie personally brought the image with him later on, when he immigrated here in Northern California in 1978.
California State Commissioner Ray Benitez Satorre, a devotee of the miraculous saint, heads the list of Hermana Mayors who will sponsor the nine (9) consecutive days festivity starting on Sunday, January 1, 2012. The festivity will end on Monday, January 9, and will be held at the resident of Ferdie Villar at 140 Escanyo Drive, South San Francisco.

There is a certain charm attached to Vice Ganda and it was proven by his hit movie Praybeyt Benjamin, which earned P320 million in ticket sales in the span of 20 days, making it the highest-earning Filipino movie of all time. The record was previously held by No Other Woman which featured Cristine Reyes, Derek Ramsey and Vice Ganda’s gal pal, Anne Curtis.
The film’s success relied heavily on his permanent stay on the wildly successful noontime variety show, Showtime and his effective self-promotion. In an interview, Vice Ganda was quoted saying, “May ibang magic ang Diyos.” Yes, Vice. Both you and Jesus are “in-kabogable.”

Miss Ecuador Olga Alva is a 23-year-old model who shone the brightest in her silvery white gown last December 10 at the UP Diliman Theater in Quezon City, when she won the 2011 Miss Earth crown.
The Miss Earth-Air title (equivalent to 1st runner-up) went to Miss Brazil, who glided the stage in her silver and white sequined gown. Miss Philippines, strikingly beautiful in her red gown, impressed the judges enough to make her 3rd runner-up (Miss Earth-Water). Miss Venezuela dazzled in her lilac gown and placed 4th (Miss Earth-Fire).
Miss Philippine Athena Imperial’s win is noteworthy as she is one of, if not the shortest candidate this year. Also, her win further solidifies our country’s reputation in the world as having beautiful women, after Shamcey Supsup’s and Gwendoline Ruais’ almost-a-winner 1st runner-up places, respectively in the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants earlier this year.
Originally, this year’s pageant was set for Thailand, but the flooding forced the organizers to hastily move it back to the Philippines. Next year, the 12th Miss Earth pageant is set for December at Ninh Thuan in Vietnam.
